She believed she lived among the stars
He would sit with her and pull them out of her long tangly hair
And you must do more than just exist to live
so he loved
Sometimes she would cry when that song played
Because she said her first love was her last
And though it hurt, his fingers were caught in her hair, holding a star
so he loved
He had other friends, but mostly they existed in his mind
She liked to wear lace skirts and peasant blouses
And when she twirled, her long hair caught the light
so he loved
One day he went to a museum
But a girl in a painting had starlight hair
He could never escape her bright eyes and soft smile
so he loved
And then one night she perished on a lake
He dressed in black and moved his life along
But every breath he took he smelled the stars
and still he loved
so he, too, died
